The person who is being profiled has either been an important participant in an important incident or presented a distinctive statement or proposal that has been documented. Barbara Heck, on the contrary, did not leave writings or statements. The evidence of such items as her date of wedding is not the only evidence. No primary source exists that can be used to reconstruct Barbara Heck's motives and behavior throughout her time. She is still a very crucial figure in the early days of Methodism. In this instance the biographer's task is to define and account for the myth and if possible to describe the actual person featured in it.

Abel Stevens, a Methodist historian in 1866, wrote about this. Barbara Heck, a humble woman from in the New World who is credited with the advancement of Methodism throughout the United States, has undoubtedly risen to first place in the ecclesiastical history of the New World. The magnitude of her record is primarily due to the setting of her precious name made from the history of the great causes with which her legacy is forever identified more than in the story of her own life. Barbara Heck, who was unintentionally involved in the founding of Methodism both in the United States and Canada, is a woman known for her fame due to the tendency of a successful organisation or movement to praise its roots to strengthen its belief in permanence and continuity.
