Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with an opportunity to study theatre or literature. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread the cause of activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay, who grew up living with family members in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would influence her later on to create the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay began producing television news as an elementary school student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of a member of the jury as well as examine their junk. The duties she was required to perform left her dissatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
